“She’ll drive the big car
He’ll sit behind
She’ll keep an eye on Jessica
South along the Hudson
She’ll turn the radio high
Find a station playing sad, sad soul”

David Bowery: From Broadway–Lafayette to the Brooklyn Museum
While in town for the David Bowie Is exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, I made a special stop at the Broadway–Lafayette station — or as fans lovingly called it, “David Bowery.” Joining me was Lorraine Massey, the original Curly Girl and founder of DevaCurl, to take in the striking station takeover. Murals, photos, and lyrics filled the space, transforming the subway into a living tribute just steps from Bowie’s former SoHo home. They even released limited-edition MetroCards to mark the moment — though sadly I never managed to get my hands on one.

With Lorraine Massey at the specially designed Broadway–Lafayette station — just steps from Bowie’s former home at 185 Lafayette Street in SoHo. This installation promoted the final stop of the acclaimed David Bowie Is exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, a fitting tribute woven right into the fabric of the city he loved.
“Something happened on the day he died
Spirit rose a metre and stepped aside
Somebody else took his place, and bravely cried
(I’m a blackstar, I’m a blackstar)”
