On Heddon St. — the location of the Ziggy Stardust album cover shoot

Jay and I traveled to London in the summer of 2013 to see this one — the Victoria & Albert Museum’s landmark exhibition, the first major retrospective of David Bowie’s career.

I still remember standing there in utter awe, from the Ziggy costumes to the small hand-painted slides he made himself. He was an all-encompassing artist — music, fashion, film, design, all one continuous act of invention. We weren’t allowed to take photos inside the exhibit, so what I have from that day is limited — but it’s enough to remember exactly how it felt.

The V&A acquired the entire David Bowie archive in 2023. The David Bowie Centre for the Study of Performing Arts, in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, is expected to open in late 2025.
