David Bowie World Fan Convention 2023: New York, New Connections
After the incredible success of the first David Bowie World Fan Convention in Liverpool (2022), the celebration moved across the Atlantic to New York City in 2023 — and what a whirlwind it was. Reuniting with the amazing friends we first met in Liverpool made the weekend feel like a true family gathering.
Highlights included meeting Joey Arias, catching up with the legendary Tony Visconti, and the unforgettable moment when Donnie McCaslin recognized me after his solo performance. The panels were outstanding, especially with the ever-charismatic Carlos Alomar sharing stories and brilliance on the guitar. At the Bowie Ball, Cherry Vanilla lit up the stage, Mark Plati delivered an electrifying set, and Carlos even jumped up to play a few songs. The weekend kicked off with a fantastic performance of Bowie classics by New York’s own Michael T, setting the tone for everything that followed.
Beyond the music and panels, it was the people who made the convention unforgettable. So many new friendships were forged, and the Bowie family spirit shone bright — staying up into the wee hours at the penthouse after party brought out the youth in all of us. Even with a few logistical hiccups, the joy of being surrounded by fellow fans made it all worthwhile. Truly, what a blast.
