Why I Write

by John Casey

Why I Write

It is one’s right, and even duty, to

write one’s self into existence.  The need

to say ‘this happened and I lived through

this, and this is how it felt like; this is

how I remembered, and this is how I survived.’

If we take time to write about ourselves

others can have a deeper understanding of us.

with no books, no journals, no memoirs, our lives,

and knowledge will be lost and our lives become faint sketches.

If you want someone to know how and why you

lived; what drove you and what hurt you; what

you saw and what you feared, you need to write it down.

So I will write as proof that I have lived.

Sometimes my memory of a particular past

required revisions as to the exactly, and

provided freedom to let my stories just come

tumbling out.
