Sound +Vision2017
Our first night at The Cutting Room · February 5, 2017
“I know something’s very wrong
The pulse returns the prodigal sons The blackout hearts, the flowered news With skull designs upon my shoes.”David Bowie
Twenty-six days later
On January 10, Janine, Jay, Tom and I were all in New York for Celebrating David Bowie at Terminal 5. Less than four weeks later, Janine and I turned around and came right back for this.
It was our very first Sound & Vision of David Bowie show at The Cutting Room — just the two of us. We hadn’t yet met the Bowie friends who would become our Cutting Room crew. We attended just one night back then, but it left us both deeply moved.
Two cities, one night
The show landed on Super Bowl Sunday — the night the Patriots came back from 28–3 to win in the first overtime in Super Bowl history.
Back home in Boston
Jay, ready for kickoff
Jay stayed home, getting ready to party hard in support of the Pats.
Meanwhile, in New York
Janine and me, ready for Bowie
While the game played out, we were at The Cutting Room, with the night’s promo up on the stage.
The Sound and Vision of David Bowie — A Celebration
The night itself
Hearing Donny McCaslin pour his soul into the Blackstar saxophone was unforgettable and very emotional, and seeing the incomparable Gail Ann Dorsey command the stage was pure joy.
It was an emotional evening, and the beginning of what would become many more Cutting Room shows for us to share. I filmed a little of it — press play.

After the show
Look up
Walking out into the night, I tried to catch the moon hanging behind the Empire State Building. The tower was glowing red, white and blue — New York lit up in Patriots colors for Boston’s Super Bowl win.
Bowie in New York, and a win for home. Not a bad Sunday.
